The latest EU Member State Deforestation Risk Profiles are out!
Our team analysed 77 products in seven commodity categories: cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, wood, and rubber. We produced 27 profiles to identify which EU member states are at higher risk of importing commodities linked to deforestation.
These latest risk profiles of each of the 27 EU member states reveal that the Netherlands remains the number one importer of deforestation-risk commodities covered under the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Our analysis demonstrates that the country imported 17.7 million metric tons of these commodity products in trade year 2024.
EU member state risk profiles since trade year 2021 will soon be available on AidEnvironment’s Compliance Checker, an interactive case studies’ tool which demonstrates the real-time impacts of commodity production, coupled with trade data analysis.
Some key highlights:
- For all seven commodities under scope of the EUDR, the top-5 EU importing member states by volumes in 2024 remained the same as in the previous year: 1) The Netherlands; 2) Germany; 3) Italy; 4) Spain; and 5) France.
- The Netherlands imported 47.4% of all palm oil products imported in the EU from non-EU origin countries in 2024; 45.8% of all cocoa products; 18% of all soy products; 15 % of all cattle products; and 10.4% of all rubber products.
- Being a top-importer of leather products, Italy imports nearly half (47%) of all cattle products that are being imported in the EU27 from non-European countries. Brazil is Italy’s largest supplier of leather hides, prepared leather, and frozen beef. This is a major risk because up to 80 percent of Amazon deforestation is attributable to the cattle sector. Cattle is also a key contributor to land conversion in the neighbouring Cerrado Biome.
- With 35.8% of the EU’s coffee imports, Germany’s risk profile is largely on coffee, sourcing heavily from deforestation-risk countries such as Brazil, Vietnam, and Honduras.
- France is an importer of potentially risky cattle products in the EU, notably frozen bovine meat (HS code 0202), processed beef (HS 160250) and prepared leather (HS 4107) from Brazil. With 9.5 % of the total EU’s cattle imports, France is one of the leading EU countries after Italy (47%) and the Netherlands (15%).
