We are hiring!

We are looking for a GIS intern who can support AidEnvironment’s Deforestation-free Supply Chains team, including deforestation analysis, land use change analysis and database maintenance. The internship’s period will be from August until October 2024, and the maximum duration is 3 months. There is an option for a temporary paid position immediately following the internship, depending on your performance and our workload at the time.

About AidEnvironment

AidEnvironment is a not-for-profit sustainability research, strategy and implementation organisation working to achieve transformative sector change. We produce actionable insights and implement sustainable solutions to help protect and restore ecosystems and improve livelihoods in agricultural and forest landscapes across Asia, Africa and Latin America.
We are an international team headquartered in the Netherlands and with a regional office in Uganda, a close partner organisation (Sangga Bumi Lestari) in Indonesia, and partners across Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and the Middle East.

AidEnvironment’s Deforestation-free Supply Chains Team supports governments, companies, civil society organisations and the financial sector with actionable data and evidence-based analysis to eliminate commodity-driven deforestation and exploitation linked to beef, leather, soy, palm oil, cocoa, coffee, timber, and pulp and paper supply chains in tropical forest countries. We monitor and analyse data on land use, land ownership, supply chain infrastructure, corporate ownership, and finance and trade flows, which are supplemented by satellite imagery and on-the-ground investigations. Our work is being used in targeted campaigns and strategic litigation focused on commodity producers, traders and buyers who fail to strengthen their sustainability policies and practices. More information on ongoing projects can be found here.

Internship: your role

We are looking for a GIS intern who can provide overall support to AidEnvironment’s Deforestation-free Supply Chains team, including deforestation analysis, land use change analysis, supply chain flow data analysis, and database maintenance (knowledge of PostgreSQL and DBeaver is a plus). The intern will mainly work on projects with a strong GIS component, focusing on soy and beef supply chains in Latin America and specifically in Brazil.

Work topics and tasks for the intern under the guidance and leadership of AidEnvironment’s sustainability analysts and researchers may include the following:

  • Support near real-time monitoring of deforestation and fire events in global commodity supply chains.
  • Collect and process data on commodities’ global trading flows.
  • Organising, processing, cleaning, and updating existing datasets in AidEnvironment’s internal database.
  • Cross-referencing datasets (tabular data with spatial data).

The specific activities and objectives will be agreed upon during the internship.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a recent graduate or a Master’s student with a background in geography and/or environmental studies. Moreover, we are searching for someone enthusiastic about working on deforestation linked to global commodities’ supply chains. If the thematic area is similar to the work, the learning opportunity can serve as your final internship for your Master’s.

One of our team members will take a six-month sabbatical starting November 2024. During your internship, you will work with and learn from her. Depending on your performance and our workload at the time, you may be offered a temporary paid position immediately following the internship.

Key requirements

  • Have a complete or be at the final stage of your Master’s with a strong spatial and data analysis component
  • Strong GIS knowledge (ArcMap, QGIS)
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent working knowledge of English
  • Pros: Code writing, programming, and knowledge in SQL (PostgreSQL, DBeaver, etc.)
  • Affinity with one or more of the following topics: sustainability issues, commodity-driven deforestation (e.g. beef and soy sectors in Brazil), trade and shipment data analysis.

What we offer

You will be a highly motivated team member in an international organisation working for a sustainable future. AidEnvironment will provide a stimulating environment with sufficient opportunities for learning, growing, and networking.

The learning opportunity is for three months, 20 to 24 hours per week. Preferably, the intern will start in August 2024. You will receive an internship compensation of € 450 per month, plus transport compensation if you live more than 10km from the Amsterdam office (max of € 150 per month) and do not have a studenten OV chipcard. The position is open to applicants of all nationalities, but we will only consider candidates with a work and residency permit for the Netherlands.
